CAMBO-LES-BAINS IS AN IDEAL STARTING POINT FOR EXPLORING THE BASQUE COUNTRY
In Cambo-les-Bains in the Basque Country, Villa Arnaga is an exceptional place that used to be the home of Edmond Rostand, the author of Cyrano de Bergerac.
Now an official Musée de France museum, the villa has an original collection of objects and works of art relating to the famous writer and his family.
Heading towards Larressore on the minor D932 road], you will find Villa Arnaga surrounded by a magnificent park and overlooking a French-style garden that is also open to visitors. We especially love visiting towards the end of springtime when the paths are lined with beautiful hydrangeas!
A lovely and easy-going outing, in Itxassou in the Basque Country and close to Cambo-les-Bains.
Park your car at the outskirts of Itxassou and put on some comfortable walking shoes to take a stroll along the River Nive towards the famous Pas de Roland.
This curiosity of nature is located in a gorge formed by the river. Legend has it that Roland – Charlemagne’s nephew – died during combat in Roncevaux in the Basque Country. The cavity is said to have been created by Roland himself who carved through the rock using his sword, Durandal.
Go to the top of the most famous mountain in the Basque Country.
On foot or by train, Le Petit train de la Rhune, at the summit you will be able to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over Saint-Jean-de-Luz Bay.
All aboard in the town of Sare, just a couple of miles from the ocean, this authentic cog railway, which opened at the beginning of the 20th century, takes you up to the summit, at an altitude of over 905 metres, in just half an hour.
A trip to the Rhune is definitely a must-do!
